7 Reasons to Stay at MICs Sant Jordi: The Best Accessible Accommodation in Barcelona

Barcelona is one of Europe’s most wheelchair accessible cities, and as a frequent traveller and wheelchair user, it’s become one of my all-time favourite destinations. I’ve just returned from my third trip to Barcelona, and for the third time, I stayed at MICs Sant Jordi. This fantastic apartment complex offers a range of accessible facilities, making it an ideal accommodation choice for disabled travellers.

Whether you’re visiting Barcelona for a few days or planning a longer stay, here are 7 reasons why you should consider booking your stay at MICs Sant Jordi.

1. Purpose-Built Adapted Apartments

MICs Sant Jordi is located in the charming Sarrià neighbourhood and is a modern, purpose-built apartment complex designed for guests with physical disabilities. The complex features 32 fully adapted apartments, each with all the necessary features to ensure accessibility and comfort.

Whether travelling alone, with family, or with a companion or caregiver, you can choose from apartments with one or two bedrooms (with different bed setups and designed to sleep 1 to 4 people) and one or two bathrooms, with or without a balcony terrace.

Our one-bedroom apartment had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The apartment includes an en-suite wetroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious living area, all designed to ensure your stay is comfortable while allowing you to maintain your independence.

2. Feels Like a Home Away From Home

Staying in a hotel can be a challenge and often lacks the comforts of home, especially when you have specific accessibility needs. But at MICs Sant Jordi, I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the advantage of having our own private apartment. I also have access to the same mobility aids and equipment that I use at home (more on that later).

With a fully equipped kitchen in the living area, we were able to prepare meals just like we would at home. The highlight for us was the wheelchair accessible balcony, which had glass panels offering an airy, open space to relax while watching the world go by.

As a disabled traveller, I believe feeling at home in your holiday accommodation is essential, and MICs Sant Jordi does a fantastic job of creating a comfortable and familiar environment—whether it’s your first stay or your third, like ours.

3. On-Site Services, Mobility Aids and Equipment

One of the standout features of MICs Sant Jordi is the range of additional services available to guests. If you need assistance during your stay, they offer a 24-hour care service (available for an additional fee).

Guests can also access a range of equipment such as mobile hoists and stand aids, shower chairs, commodes, etc. I requested a shower chair and a Molift Quick Raiser hoist, the same sit-to-stand aid hoist I use at home.

There’s even an adapted gym and hydrotherapy pool, which are excellent amenities for anyone looking to maintain their exercise routine or try something different while away. I enjoyed using the hydrotherapy pool in the evenings after a busy day of exploring Barcelona.

Other services include an on-site physiotherapist and a restaurant, ensuring you have everything you need to relax and enjoy your stay.

4. Accessible Apartments with Profiling Beds, Wetrooms & more

When it comes to accessibility, MICs Sant Jordi ensure it is a priority. The apartments are equipped with twin height adjustable profiling beds with foam-pressure mattresses or air mattresses—a necessity you don’t often find in hotels.

The en-suite wetroom was also great. It had a roll-in shower with a fold-down seat, a toilet, and a sink I could roll under, all equipped with grab rails for added safety.

I was also able to request a shower chair, which worked perfectly for me. The sink was slightly too close to the toilet for my transfers, but we managed to make it work.

Light switches and sockets are placed at heights suitable for wheelchair users. The bedroom has two spacious sliding-door wardrobes, providing plenty of storage space.

5. Fully Equipped Kitchens for Self-Catering

One of the best things about staying at MICs Sant Jordi is the self-catering facilities. This time, we took full advantage of the well-equipped kitchen, which includes:

  • A two-ring electric hob
  • A combi-oven
  • A large fridge/freezer
  • A dishwasher
  • A kettle, and plenty of plates, cutlery, mugs, and utensils

Having these facilities allowed us to save money and was super convenient on days when we were too tired to eat out at restaurants.

There are also several supermarkets within walking distance, including an ALDI around a 10-minute walk away, where we stocked up on groceries for our stay.

But if you’re not feeling up to cooking and don’t want to go out, you can pop downstairs to the restaurant in MICs Sant Jordi. It also serves breakfast.

6. Responsive and Helpful Staff

During our stay at MICs Sant Jordi, I found the staff to be incredibly attentive and accommodating. For example, when I mentioned the breakfast bar in our apartment was a bit too high for me in my wheelchair, they quickly provided a height adjustable table that I could use comfortably. This made such a difference, allowing me to eat and drink independently.

Additionally, the staff is very responsive to your needs. On one occasion, we accidentally hit the call bell located next to the bed, and a staff member responded immediately, which was very reassuring.

It’s these small, thoughtful touches that really enhance the experience. Whether you need specific equipment or have special requests, the staff is always ready to assist and ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during your stay.

7. Prime Location for Exploring Barcelona

Fortunately, MICs Sant Jordi is located in the upscale Sarrià neighbourhood, which is still close to all the action in Barcelona. The neighbourhood itself has plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. There’s a popular bakery just across the street from MICs Sant Jordi, so grabbing fresh bread and pastries in the morning is super easy!

There’s an accessible metro station (Tres Torres) right outside the building (pictured above), making it easy to explore the city. La Rambla is just a 10-minute ride away, and there is also a bus that stops right outside the building. This location truly strikes the perfect balance between tranquillity and proximity to Barcelona’s major attractions.

Travel tip: I bought a ‘T-Casual’ travel ticket, which includes 10 journeys on the metro and bus.

Overall, MICs Sant Jordi is an excellent accessible accommodation offering the perfect base for exploring Barcelona. With its purpose-built design, accessible amenities, convenient location, and dedicated staff, it meets all my needs as a full-time wheelchair user looking to experience this vibrant city. MICs Sant Jordi feels like a home away from home, making it my top choice for future trips to Barcelona.
