Wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) have become increasingly common on the roads and this is fantastic because they can transform the lives of those that require the use of a wheelchair. Public transportation can be challenging when you are a wheelchair user, but a WAV allows you to travel easily, comfortably and safely and they can be driven by the wheelchair user in some cases.

Adaptations
With so many wheelchair users looking for a vehicle that allows them to travel with ease, it means that there are all kinds of terrific WAVs available in all shapes and sizes. These are typical automobiles which have been adapted usually by lowering the floor, redesigning the interior and by adding either a ramp or lift so that access is made quick and easy.
Different Types
In some cases, not many adaptations have to be made and this is true of larger people carriers and vans where the point of entry will already be high enough for a wheelchair user to gain access. It can still be relatively easy for a family car to be adapted so that a wheelchair user can ride as passenger safely, but often these automobiles will not have as much space for storage and/or other passengers so you will need to keep this in mind when shopping for a WAV.
Finding the Right WAV
The best way to find the right WAV for your exact needs will be to visit a specialist like Allied Mobility. Experts like this will be able to provide high-quality and safe WAVs which are designed, tested and manufactured to meet the stringent safety and quality standards. Additionally, companies like this can offer home demonstrations so that you can test the vehicle first and learn the best way to use it. Every user will have different needs depending on their condition and their lifestyle, so it is always helpful if you can speak to an expert and try a few different WAVs to get an idea of what is best for you.
WAVs can transform the lives of those that require the use of a wheelchair by making transportation much easier and stress-free. There are all kinds of different WAVs available today, including large vans and people carriers through to smaller automobiles, so you should easily be able to find one that is well suited to your specific needs. Once you have a vehicle arranged, you will find that it has a huge impact on your daily life and takes the stress out of arranging transport.

In addition, there is the mobility scheme where you lease a vehicle for a few years and there is no financial cost to you or your family (except petrol/diesel) 😉
Yup, that’s right, there is also the mobility scheme. Many, if not all the WAVs have an upfront advance payment, but it’s very beneficial to lease it through Motability. 🙂
